The government is struggling to contain a serious outbreak of bird flu that has spread across almost half of West Bengal. The virus has been detected in nine of the states 19 districts. As the flu closes in on capital Kolkata, surveillance has been intensified but the Centre has said that the efforts are simply not enough.
As bird flu spread across two more districts, the state government moved in to seal Kolkata to produce from the affected areas. The state’s Animal Resources Development Department, which made the request for sealing, will provide officials to man the checkposts with the police. The police are also to seal the affected areas so no poultry products move out either.
